The western Futon can be used as a bed, chair or sofa. It can be slept on during the night then converted into a sofa for daytime use. The design of Futon furniture enables you to easily move the furniture around your home. You will find two main styles of Futon furniture frames.

- Tri-fold. This frame utilizes three slat racks. The Futon mattress can be hung over the back of the Tri-fold frame. It can also be folded under itself on the seat rack or it can be laid flat with the appearance of a chaise lounge. The Futon mattress that accompanies the Tri-fold frame can be folded twice along the usually shorter width of the mattress. The Tri-fold frame lends itself well to providing many different lounge positions as well as converting into a comfortable bed.
Your choice of frame material will strongly influence the price you pay for your Futon furniture. You can choose from the following:
- Wood frames: The best wooden frames are made with strictly clear finished wood. There should be no knots or bark. You may find oak, ash, pine, cherry and maple. Pine tends to be less expensive while most hardwoods are more expensive.
- Metal Frames: Metal frames are very popular. There is a difference between high-quality metal Futon frames and cheap metal Futon frames. The cheap ones are often sold for under $100 at retail outlets. These frames do not provide value and often don’t last. High quality metal Futon frames can provide a beautiful addition to your home.
Fully upholstered Frames: These provide the look of a conventional upholstered sofa. If you desire the look of a traditional sofa but you want the functionality of Futon furniture then this might a good choice for you.
